SIDE ONE
PLEASURE ZONE
(David Bentley APRA/Amcos)
Jazz / blues-oriented music can be – should be – joyous. On this track, the bass defines the groove, the lyrics imply sophistication, there’s room for improvisation. 31/08/18.
CASH IN THE HAND
(David Bentley APRA/Amcos)
We reinvent this song whenever we play. Hardly any of my early compositions have escaped erasure from the repertoire. This one is an exception. 31-08-18.
MANU ISLAND BLUES
(David Bentley APRA/Amcos)
A blues for asylum seekers who flee war and persecution. I wrote this one for refugees incarcerated on Manus Island, New Guinea. 12-06-22.
ALIMONY
(David Bentley APRA/Amcos)
Not every couple stays married. If divorced, you’ll know all about alimony. Recorded at Brisbane Jazz Club’s 50th anniversary, 06/12/22.
LOADED DICE
(David Bentley APRA/Amcos)
In New Orleans second line drumming accompanies funeral marches. I used the same rhythm as backdrop to this song set in an outback town. 31-08-18.
SIDE TWO
IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU
(Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen)
An evergreen from the 1944 film And The Angels Sing. Ahmed Jamal transformed it into a jazz standard. Miles Davis took it further on his 1958 album Relaxin’. 31-08-18.
DAYS LIKE THIS
(Mose Alison)
Songwriter Mose Alison at his whimsical best. We were unaware that we were being recorded. The fun we had performing this song shines through. 31/08/18.
YOUNG MAN BLUES
(Mose Alison)
From Mose Allison’s 1957 release, Back Country Suite, our 2024 reading features William Barton on didgeridoo. 17/08/24.
HEAR ME TALKIN’ TO YA
(Ma Rainey)
First recorded the 1920s by Ma Rainey’s Tub Washboard Band, this song deploys lyrics drawn from the street patois of America’s Deep South. 17/08/24.
ABOUT
The David Bentley Trio plus One: On The Record is a 12” vinyl LP comprising tracks selected from live recordings at Brisbane Jazz Club over an 11 year period.
Deepest thanks to:
Brisbane Jazz Club’s resident sound engineer Mark Smith who recorded, mixed and mastered these recordings.
Jazz Photographer Geoff Norris who chronicled our performances so stylishly and quietly over the years.
Didgeridoo master William Barton whose impromptu guest appearance brought the house down (as always).
My wife Lena whose patience and behind-the-scenes support have never wavered throughout our journey together.
Josh Durham’s cover design reflects the Blue Note era of jazz recordings and a sense of joyful exuberance pervades all eight tracks on this limited edition vinyl LP.
A round of applause to the responsive and informed audiences who enliven our shows. Without you, this album would not exist.
